China Expands Access for Australian Canola Imports, Diversifying Feed Protein Supply

China has expanded access for Australian canola imports, allowing qualified private crushers to process the oilseed through designated ports and approved facilities. The move could diversify China’s feed protein supply and provide feed manufacturers with greater flexibility in sourcing canola meal and other protein ingredients.

Canola is primarily processed into vegetable oil and canola meal. The meal remaining after oil extraction is widely used as a protein ingredient in livestock feed, particularly in ruminant, swine and poultry formulations. Greater access to Australian canola therefore has implications beyond the edible oil market, potentially increasing the range of protein feed ingredients available to Chinese feed manufacturers.

The latest policy follows earlier trial purchases of Australian canola and broadens import opportunities beyond state-owned buyers. According to Reuters, the policy was reported on 13 July 2026, and processing will remain limited to approved facilities located near designated entry ports, reflecting China’s continued focus on quarantine and biosecurity management for imported oilseeds.
