EU Tariff Delay Brings Relief to Spain’s Livestock Feed Sector

On April 10, 2025, Reuters reported that the European Union’s decision to delay tariff measures on U.S. goods brought short-term relief to Spain’s livestock feed sector, which had heavily purchased U.S. corn during the season. The planned tariff package had included a 25% duty on U.S. corn, originally expected to take effect on April 15.

According to Reuters, Spain is one of Europe’s major grain-importing countries, with imported grain playing an important role in supporting its large pig farming sector. Feed makers had several cargoes of U.S. corn already on the way, and the delay reduced immediate concerns over shipment timing and import costs.

Although the tariff pause eased short-term pressure, the report also highlighted the need for Spanish feed manufacturers to diversify supply sources. Possible alternatives include Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina, or other cereals, but short-term competitiveness remains a key concern for feed producers.
